Baseline Assessment of the Elementary/Secondary Education Industry

Abstract

Education is one of the largest industries in the United States. It is also an important industry because it provides the training for today's and tomorrow's workforce. Many businesses and universities believe that today's high school graduates do not have the basic skill& in reading, writing, and mathematics to be productive workers. Furthermore, U.S. students do not compete well on international mathematics and science tests. After reviewing the structure and conduct of the elementary/secondary education industry, this paper provides examples of performance in math and science. Finally, it discusses some of the ongoing improvement efforts that give some hope for a better future.
