Electrically Driven Aircraft Compressor (EDAC) Program.

Abstract

The objective of the Electrically Driven Aircraft Compressor program is to develop and demonstrate electrically driven compressor technology offering high reliability and long life while also providing increased pressure capability. Reliability of existing compressors suffers due to wear resulting from piston side loading. A free-piston design is being investigated which eliminates this wear mechanism while allowing increased pressure output. High pressure pneumatic systems offer superior energy discharge rates as well as potential weight and volume reductions over systems based on hydraulic accumulators or batteries. Phase I highlights include a pneumatic system applications, requirements, and sizing study for representative fighter aircraft and initial conceptual designs which will be compared during Phase II....
