Survey of Generation and Management of Explosive-Laden Spent Carbon
Abstract
Nine Army installations were surveyed with respect to current methods of managing activated carbon spent during the treatment of explosive-containing wastewater. The initial purpose of this survey, designed to follow-up on a previous survey conducted in 1986, was to identify the potential market of explosive-laden carbon for commercial regeneration. Additional objectives of the survey were to document spent carbon management efforts and regeneration experiences of the individual installations surveyed. The following summarizes the primary findings of this survey: A greater than 40% decrease in spent carbon generation has occurred since 1986; An increase in spent carbon generation (Army-wide) is unlikely within the next two years; Experiences with regeneration of explosive-laden carbon are mixed (ranging from negative to positive) across the installations surveyed. Explosives, Pinkwater, Carbon adsorption, Carbon regeneration.
