1ST Battalion, 37th Armor Rear Detachment Operations and Family Support Group Activities During the Gulf War

Abstract

The 1st Battalion, 37th Armor was alerted for deployment to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in November 1990 and deployed with the 1st Armored Division. Throughout the preparation for deployment and the deployment itself, important lessons were learned in the organization and operation of a rear detachment and Family Support Group at the battalion level. Many of the problems encountered were unique to units that deployed from Germany. Some were unique to 1-37 Armor because it was detached from its parent brigade which remained in Germany, and attached to another brigade for the duration of the deployment. However, many of the lessons are applicable to all army units. This paper describes 1-37 Armor's Rear Detachment and Family Support Group operations during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and the problems encountered, and offers some recommendations to solve the problems for future deployments.
