U.S. Army Medium Lift Modernization.
Abstract
The Army and Army Aviation have fought hard to modernize its helicopter fleet, despite current and impending defense budget cuts. From the Korean War and the jungles of Vietnam to the deserts of Iraq, combat operations have clearly reinforced requirements and identified improvements necessary to sustain a modern helicopter fleet. Current aviation modernization plans capitalize on the latest experiences in the desert and focus on rebuilding or improving the majority of the helicopter fleet. These plans, however, fail to support modernization of the current medium-lift helicopter or development of an advanced cargo aircraft. The lack of an improved medium-lift platform translates into limited capabilities, reducing the combat effectiveness of the remaining aviation fleet. This study will look at the development of cargo helicopters in the Army and lessons learned from the personal experiences of a CH-47D battalion commander during Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM. Using that information and current initiatives and plans of aerospace industries, several options and recommendations will be discussed concerning a potential aviation modernization plan for the medium-lift helicopter or advanced cargo aircraft.
