Crossing the Line in the Sand: 4th Battalion, 67th Armor in Southwest Asia
Abstract
This paper is a personal experience monograph dealing with the author's unit in Southwest Asia, focusing on armor task force level operations conducted by a tank battalion in the 3d Armored Division. The monograph describes battalion operations through a wide variety of missions during a five-and-one-half month deployment to Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Kuwait. During the period the battalion missions were: prepare and deploy from Germany to SWA, operate a troop reception station for VII Corps, conduct combat operations during the ground war, border security and humanitarian relief missions in Iraq after the war, perform internal security missions for Kuwait, and redeploy back to Germany. Lessons are drawn from the deployment as an example of the Army's new tenet of versatility, as defined in the draft version of FM 100-5, Operations. The paper also draws lessons from the experiences of the battalion in the desert on the problems of deploying units, conducting family support operations for dependents left behind, and using standard drills for heavy combined arms task forces.
