Intelligence, Deception and Operational Surprise.

Abstract

This paper examines the commander's use of intelligence to gain greater understanding of his adversary, the intelligence methods necessary for successful employment of deception, the principles of successful deception, and the practice of deception within the context of the modern electronic battlefield. Due to the draw down of U.S. military forces, it is imperative for operational planners to actively exploit every force multiplier available to them. The element of operational surprise as achieved through deception is one such multiplier, and its success is dependent upon a thorough understanding of the proper use of intelligence and the tenets of successful deception. It is the study of past experience that allows the commander to not only appreciate the utility of deception in achieving that critical force multiplier known as surprise, but also to learn valuable lessons concerning the proper use of intelligence and deception in order to avoid negative consequences.
