Development of the ALQ-155 Receiver-Transmitter Container, CNV-552/E.

Abstract

The Air Force Packaging Evaluation Activity (AFPEA) was task with PRAM project 22091-01, the design of a new shipping and storage container for the ALQ-155 Receiver-Transmitter in October of 1991. The new container will replace the wood containers presently used. The wood containers' excessive failures during shipment and storage and the unsafe handling procedures required for inserting and removing the unit from the container, directed AFPEA's design of the new container. the container developed, CNU-552/E, will protect the R/T unit mechanically as well as environmentally during worldwide shipment and storage. The CNU-552/E designed IAW MIL-STD-5584, is an aluminum, long-life, controlled breathing, reuseable container. The container passed all qualification tests IAW FED-STD-101 and MIL-STD-648 as well as a field test (shipment of a unit through the supply system). The CNU-552/E container will not only meet the users' requirements but will also provide an economic saving in O and M costs. The O and M savings will be approximately one million dollars over the twenty-year life span of the container.
