Guidelines for Applying Video Simulation Technology to Training Land Design

Abstract

Army land managers must balance training needs with environmental concerns to provide realistic, feasible training while minimizing environmental impacts to Army lands. Achieving this balance requires an understanding of training needs and the ability to communicate the training area design and management process to trainers, experts, and the general public. Research on video simulation of training land design was initiated in 1989 as part of the Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) program. Under the ITAM program, the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories (USACERL) developed a three-phase research implementation approach for video simulation. Video technology may help land managers communicate technical information in a simple form that is easy for both technical and nontechnical persons to understand, by visually simulating the effects of land management actions. This report comprises a part of the first phase of the program, and is intended to fill the need for an instructional and reference manual designed to help Army land managers and trainers better apply video simulation technology to their land management activities....
