Petite Amateur Naval Satellite Spacecraft Digital Control System: A Hardware Design

Abstract

This thesis provides the foundational hardware design for the Digital Control System of the Petite Amateur Navy Satellite (PANSAT). The design implements a multitasking operating system to provide store and forward communications. This design contains 'pair and a spare' technology to provide redundancy for space operations. Addresses necessary for software design are discussed and examples of initializing commands for the more complex sections are given. CMOS technology was used throughout the design to minimize the power requirements. RS422 protocol was used on all communications lines to lessen the impact of noise. The MSOC 186 microprocessor coupled with an 82C55 Programmable Peripheral Interface are the cornerstone of the design. All peripheral sections, Telemetry, Memory, and Communications are designed to be controlled by the M80Cl86 vis the 82C55. Since the mission of PANSAT may be changed slightly before the launch of the vehicle, the hardware design contained in this document is engineered to be upwardly compatible where possible....
