A Real-Time Spoken-Language System for Interactive Problem Solving
Abstract
SRI International (SRI) has carried out a three-year project to develop spoken-language understanding technology for interactive problem solving, featuring real-time performance, large vocabulary, high semantic accuracy, habitability, and robustness. This technology has been developed using an Air Travel Information System (ATIS) as a prototype application. We have developed technology that enables a user to retrieve airline schedules, fares, and related information by means of spoken natural-language queries. We have evaluated this technology in four ATIS benchmark evaluations, and we have incorporated it into a demonstration system, which we have also used for data collection. This final report consists of a summary of the research and other activities carried out under the project, followed by an Appendix containing 26 technical papers describing work performed on the project. The report covers work on speech recognition, natural-language understanding, speech and natural- language integration, data collection and analysis, performance evaluation, demonstration systems, and related activities
