EMP Hardening Investigation of the PRC-77 Radio Set

Abstract

The susceptibility of a PRC-77 Radio to a simulated nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) was investigated. Detailed evaluation procedures and results are presented. It is shown that under normal operating conditions, with either the 72-cm or 2.9-m antenna, it is very unlikely that there will be any damage to the radio in the event of an EMP. It should be noted that this was one of the first evaluations performed in the Defence Research Electromagnetic Pulse Simulator (DREMPS) and the investigation was viewed primarily as a means of optimizing general analysis techniques.
