Joint Theater Missile Defense-Behind the 8-Ball.

Abstract

The War with Iraq has finally caused the Western World to realize the Tactical Ballistic Missile threat can extend outside regional conflicts between two Third World countries. This paper will address the proliferation of this increasing threat, briefly describe the leading Western defense systems, and focus on the relevance this threat poses to the operational commander. Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) includes nuclear, chemical, and biological, as well as conventional weapons. This paper focuses on the non-nuclear threat. The pervading chemical and biological use of Tactical Ballistic Missiles gnaws at the ethics of modern warfare, but Third World countries have been using these weapons for years. The level of effort a commander must apply to the TBM threat is relatively unchanged for a conventional or chemical/biological threat. But his approach to orchestrating the plan for war must now consider how this threat changes his attention to the principles be learned as the foundations of warfare.... The Theater Ballistic Missile Threat and how the operational commander must plan his operations
