The Construction of the Small Scale Cook-off Bomb (SCB) op het PML-TNO (De constructie vande Small scale Cook-off Bomb (SCB) op het PML-TNO)

Abstract

In the scope of the project "Thermal Initiation" the construction of the "Small scale Cook-off Bomb (SCB) from test series 1 and 2 of the UN Orange Book has been started in the spring of 1991. Besides the fact that this test will contribute to the research program, it contributes to the harmonization of the tests described in these recommendations of the UN. After some research in literature construction of the SCB was started. During this construction is became obvious that the type and dimensions were not always fully specified in the UN Orange Book. After some preliminary tests, experiments with TNT, RDX and AN were performed. By comparison of our results with those of the UN it became obvious that the prescribed heating rate was not correct. Using a constant controlled heating rate or a constant power was another dissension we encountered, as well as the degree of confinement to use. Further research will be necessary to come to a correct prescription of the SCB in the UN recommendations. After some minor corrections of the construction and its prescription this simple test can still be used for classification of explosive compounds in test series 1 and 2.
