Abstract

Describes electronic messaging systems, including their general principles, potential uses for transmitting information between people and between applications, problems of compatibility and possible solutions, messaging and data formats, and system architecture. Also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these systems in relation to competitors such as telefax, and the risks inherent in introducing them and ways of overcoming these risks. Concludes with recommendations for AGARD (NATO's Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development). This publication was sponsored by the Technical Information Panel of AGARD.
