Visual Knowledge in Tactical Planning: Phase III Final Technical Report

Abstract

This report summarizes the Visual Knowledge in Tactical Planning project. The report details the process and the results of Phase III which focused on prototype development. The purpose of the software prototype was to demonstrate the interaction between visual and symbolic reasoning processes exercised during the planning of ground tactical maneuvers. The first prototype was developed as a visually oriented interface to a ground combat simulation. The tactical problem selected for implementation was that of selection of an avenue of approach based on trafficability and exposure. The prototype uses the symbolic representation of the typical Army plan interactively with the visual representation of the map annex to the plan. The prototype was developed on a Macintosh IIfx using the Supercard (tm) programming environment. Map images were scanned in and later manipulated use PhotoShop (tm) software.
