Metabolic Monitoring of Hypobaric Subjects

Abstract

The objective of Task Order No. 0013, amendment to USAF Contract No. F33615-89-C0603, was to quantify the metabolic activity of subjects during isometric and isotonic exercise to develop procedures for individualized exercise performance during simulated high altitude exposures. To satisfy the stated objective, KRUG Life Sciences performed the following task: (1) designed and instrumented a stack- machine suitable for isometric or isotonic exercise performed with the arm or legs; (2) provided and operated an advanced metabolic measurement system capable of breath-by-breath analysis of low-level oxygen consumption data; (3) provided for administration of criterion tests for maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) and maximal voluntary contraction; (4) developed procedures for equating and individualizing the isometric and isotonic work by means of oxygen consumption (% of VO2 max); and (5) provided procedures for training subjects on the individual exercise programs.... Oxygen consumption, Oxygen uptake, Isotonic, Isometric.
