Historic Archeological Study: Fort Des Moines III Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa

Abstract

The historic archeological study of Fort Des Moines III in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa was conducted to locate and evaluate archeological resources within a specified area of this National Historic Landmark. The entire project area was surveyed for its historic archeological cultural resource potential at the Phase I level. Virtually all of the 78 razed building sites (termed components of the fort site in this report) were located. Where a U.S. Army Reserve Center is planned was tested at the Phase II level. No further work at the planned Reserve Center site is recommended. Five building components elsewhere on the site are recommended for Phase II historical and archeological evaluation.
