Distributed Reasoning and Planning

Abstract

This document describes research conducted by SRI International on the Office of Naval Research project Distributed Reasoning and Planning. A central focus in artificial intelligence (AI) research is the development of systems that are capable of reasoning about their environments and of planning appropriate courses of action to pursue. Yet for many applications, it is insufficient to rely on a single, autonomous system; instead, a network of physically distributed computer systems must be used. Each of those systems must itself have significant reasoning and planning capabilities, that is, it must be an intelligent agent in its own right. Research in distributed reasoning and planning is concerned with the development of a theoretical framework for designing, building, and managing networks of intelligent agents, which can plan in cooperation with one another to achieve given goals.
