Total Quality Management and Applications to the Construction Industry

Abstract

Total quality management was first officially introduced in the 1940's and has continued to change and improve through the years. Even though this concept has not yet been fully accepted by business in the United States, the acceptance and implementation of total quality management programs is increasing. The single greatest obstacle for total acceptance seems to be based on the fact that business managers in the United States are more interested in short term results and profits than in steady, long term growth and improvement. This mind-set requires that chief executive officers and top management improve the bottom line rapidly. Usually these results are only temporary and after the initial results begin to taper off, top management personnel move on to a new company.
