M825A1 White Phosphorous Malfunction Investigation Related to the M739/ M739A1 Safing and Arming Module

Abstract

The Chemical Research Development and Engineering Center (CRDEC) has experienced dudding problems with the M825Al white phosphorous (WP) projectile during lot acceptance testing (LAT). An investigation of the data revealed changes in the burster and the M739/M739Al safing and arming (S&A) module. The Armaments Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC), Fuze Division, was tasked to evaluate the S&A. Evaluation of hardware, tolerance studies, spin tests, and functioning tests were conducted. Based upon there results, it was concluded that the S&A is highly unlikely to have caused the malfunction....
