Archeological Investigations at 3CR238: Lithic Procurement and Tool Production in the Upper White River Valley.

Abstract

Archeological excavations were undertaken at 3CR238, Carroll County, Arkansas. These excavations were designed primarily to salvage a portion of the site which was being eroded into Table Rock Lake and subjected to frequent unauthorized collecting activity. 3CR238 was determined to be a stratified site containing materials from the Woodland and Archaic periods. Detailed investigations were undertaken regarding the lithic procurement and tool production employed at this location. The study concluded that the major focus of the lithic industry at this location was the manufacture of bifacial projectile points from chert cobbles gathered from nearby gravel bars.
