Anomalous Dielectric Properties of Carbon-Black Filled Elastomers

Abstract

Dielectric measurements covering nearly ten decades in frequency are given for a series of neoprene elastomers containing various amounts of conductive carbon black filler. The influence of the conductive filler upon the dielectric properties of the elastomers is treated by an extension of the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars effect to account for slow tunneling and hopping modes of conduction within the elastomer. Effects upon dielectric response due to clustering and agglomeration of carbon particles are discussed together with some of the problems associated with application of dielectric measurements to obtain information about the internal structure of inhomogeneous materials....
