MAS Bulletin. HYDROBALL - An Expendable Current Profiling System.

Abstract

A Canadian manufacturer , NewTech Instruments Ltd., introduced a new Ocean Current Profiling System at Defense Oceanology 89 which is designed for use from moving vessels. The principle of operation is to derive current profiles from the tracking of a Lagrangian drifter falling through the water column. The drifter is a spherical, expendable probe with possible applications in both the offshore and defense worlds. Called HYDROBALL, the system operates on the principle of calculating a current velocity profile from the hydrodynamic response of a freely falling object passing through a flow field.
