Probability-Based Ship Design Procedures: A Demonstration. Phase 1.

Abstract

The report provides a demonstration on the use of probability based ship structural design methods and enumerates the benefits in comparison to traditional methods. Two basic demonstrations are provided. The first illustrates the development and calibration of design criteria that produce uniform safety over a wide range of basic parameters involved in design. The second applies state of the art reliability techniques to determine safety levels of existing vessels, taking into consideration uncertainties in loads, strength and calculation procedures. In addition, structural reliability terminology, limit states and load extrapolation techniques pertinent to ships are defined and described. Probability, Structural reliability, Ship design.
