Collisional Processes Involving Atmospheric Gases

Abstract

Optical emission cross section and excitation function for the D2 pi g --> A2 pi u bands of N2+ produced by electron impact on N2 molecules have been measured. Analysis of the results indicates the difference in the production mechanisms for the N2+ (D2 pi g) state as compared to the production mechanisms for the N2+ (A2 pi u) and N2+ (B2 sigma + u)2 states.
