A Comparison of Polygraphic and Actigraphic Monitoring of Sleep Using a 5-Channel Programmable-Sensitivity Actigraph
Abstract
The purpose of this project was to investigate the utility of a new device, the AMA-32 actigraph, for monitoring the general activity of human subjects both during sleep and wake. In the first phase of the project, a software program for the analysis of AMA-32 data files was developed. In the second phase, the effects of frequency passband and threshold settings of the AMA-32 amplifier were examined in a 96-hour study. It was concluded that discrimination of sleep from wake was best with the 2-3 Hz passband, which emulates earlier-generation actigraphs, and that existing algorithms for automatic sleep scoring of actigraphs are not applicable to actigraph data collected with non-traditional analog amplifier characteristics. Additional studies are needed to further explore the utility of the additional features offered by the AMA-32.
