Use of a Simple Model to Calculate Velocity Profiles Over Changing Bed Slopes

Abstract

This report describes a simple numerical model operated on a personal computer (PC) to predict velocity differences caused by changes in bathymetry. The model results were compared to various flume tests, and the model appears reasonable for use as a planning tool for calculations at dredged material disposal sites. The model is intended to allow engineers to calculate the local velocities for the pre- and post-dredged material placement conditions to determine whether the material would be eroded and transported away from the disposal site. The model (HPROFILE) predicts the vertical velocity profile at various depths in the riverine- and tide-dominant flows. A mathematical proof of the model stability (Appendix A) and a user's guide (Appendix B) are included.
