A Study of the Relationship Between Leadership Style and Gender
Abstract
This study's thesis is that women officers in the U.S. Army use a more participative leadership style than their male counterparts. The research methodology was designed to determine the predominant leadership style of thirty men and thirty-four women. The subjects were students enrolled in the resident phase of the Command and General Staff Officers Course during 1992-1993. Two tools were used in this examination: the command philosophy statement and the Leader Behavior Analysis II Self-A Survey (LBAII). The command philosophy statements were evaluated using a multi-frame analysis consisting of four frames: human resource, structural, political, and symbolic. The LBAII rated an individual's perceived leadership style as S1-high directive, low supportive behavior; S2-high directive, high supportive behavior; S3-low directive, high supportive behavior; or S4-low directive, low supportive behavior. The results of the study indicate that men and women were very similar in their choices of leadership style. The study identifies and analyzes three correlations of significance. The first is between the human resource frame and gender. The second is concerned with the relationship between the political frame and the human resource frame. The third deals with the relationship between branch category and gender.
