Battalion Level Officer Leader Development Programs: Developing a Model for Success

Abstract

This study seeks to identify a model for battalion-level officer leader development. It examines most current doctrine and literature regarding leader development. This study defines the requirement for officer leader development based on doctrinal and current thought. It then uses the information to develop a model for battalion-level officer leader development. It also uses officer leader development vigneetes to illustrate the components of the proposed model through notional leaders. Current doctrine and the proposed model were evaluated by students in the Pre-Command Course at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The study concludes that the current FM 25-101, Battle Focused Training, model for officer leader development is inadequate. It recommends the development of a training circular to provide specific techniques for unit-level leader development.
