Early Entry Lethality and Survivability Contingency Force Operations Using Army Aviation

Abstract

This study analyzes contingency force projection of U.S. Army forces, emphasizing deployability, survivability, lethality, and sustainability by using U.S. Army Aviation assets. This study examines current operational force structure of the Corps Aviation Brigade, light and heavy Division Aviation Brigades. It also discussed the operational continuum, contingency operations, power projection, early entry lethality and survivability, and the employment of Army aviation assets in earlier contingency operations. The analysis examines the required capabilities as outline in the early entry lethality and survivability battle dynamic operations concept: deployability; lethality; survivability; and sustainability. The analysis looks at the concept of early entry operations and compares what the early entry force must be capable of doing with the Aviation Mission Essential Task List (METL). Operation Urgent Fury, Just Cause, and Desert Shield/Desert Storm were ed as part of this study to see if the requirements are met. The study concludes that Army aviation can act as a base unit or a component of a base unit also. That Army aviation forces meet the requirements for contingency force projection of U.S. Army forces that emphasize deployability, lethality, survivability, and sustainability.
