Abstract

The MK 92 MOD 2 FireControl System is a complex weapons system based on 1970's technology. It is a maintenance intensive system requiring, extensive technical trouble-shooting and, occasionally, supplemental shore base support. Development of an expert maintenance system for the MK 92 MOD 2 Fire Control System offers a viable solution to the labor intensive efforts to the technicians, reduces the number of visits by shore based support staff, and provides relief to an already overburdened maintenance budget. It will also significantly reduce the depot repair 'no fault evident' rate which is the result of good parts replaced because of detective trouble-shooting. This thesis addresses the first iteration of prototype development of the performance channels of the MK 92 MOD 2 Maintenance Advisor Expert System. Specific issues covered include the scope of the project hardware selection system shell selection, Knowledge acquisition, knowledge implementation and lessons learned in the process
