Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Research (AIDS)
Abstract
A comprehensive HIV Research Program conducted studies in the areas or Vaccines and Immunotherapy/Immunoprophylaxis, Epidemiology/Natural History, Behavioral Medicine, Chemotherapy/Chemoprophylaxis, Retroviral Biology, Animal models, Diagnostics and opportunistic Infections. Research was directed towards ameliorating the effects of HIV infections within the US Armed Forces. Program priorities were early stage disease over late stage disease; interventions over descriptive studies; and primary anti-retroviral therapy over treatment/ prophylaxis of opportunistic infection or symptomatic therapy of late stage disease. Research involved clinical trials, natural history studies, and laboratory and animal model studies.
