Structure of Ordinary Ice Ih. Part 1: Ideal Structure of Ice

Abstract

This report examines the defect-free structure of ordinary I sub h, reviewing experimental results and theoretical models of the arrangement of oxygen and hydrogen atoms and the electronic structure of ice. Special attention is given to the results of studies from the last two decades. Among the experimental techniques under consideration are X-ray diffraction, optical absorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultraviolet optical spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and electron spin resonance. The main subjects discussed are the chemical content of ice, the structure and properties of water molecules, hydrogen bonds, phase transitions, protonic disorder and electron energy spectrum of ice.
