Geomorphic Investigation of Shreveport to Daingerfield Navigation Project

Abstract

The investigation presented in this report provides a geomorphic framework for cultural resources evaluation along the Shreveport, LA, to Daingerfield, TX, reach of the Red River Waterway. The main focus of the study examined the Big Cypress Bayou portion of the proposed navigational project. The Red River segment was evaluated in general geomorphic terms and how its processes affect Caddo Lake and the Big Cypress Bayou reach. The study consisted of two phases. Phase I was a preliminary investigation involving field reconnaissance and geomorphic mapping. The mapping identified three major landforms surfaces, i.e. valley slopes, terraces, and the floodplain. Phase II expanded the study to test site specific stratigraphic and chronological characteristics of different depositional environments. Radiometric dates provide a partial chronology for the geomorphic development of the study area. The archaeological significance of the geomorphic features and history is provided to predict site potential. Correlation of existing archaeological data indicates a landscape affinity by cultural component. Archaic sites are concentrated on the valley slopes and terraces. Caddo sites correlate to historic shorelines and with point bar and natural levee deposits on the floodplain. Big Cypress Bayou, Geomorphology, Caddo, Red river.
