Advanced Waveform Research Methods for GERESS Recordings

Abstract

The German Experimental Seismic System (GERESS) is operated by Ruhr- University Bochum, Germany. It is an extension of the Scandinavian regional array network, i.e. NORESS, ARCESS, and FINESA, into Central Europe. This report summarizes research activities carried out at the data centre at the Institute of Geophysics in Bochum during the first semiannual period (June-November 1993) of the current grant. GERESS data are continuously transmitted from the array hub in Bavaria to Bochum and analyzed by an on-line processing system, based on RONAPP, to locate seismic events in near real-time. In 1993, Ruhr-University contained the on-site maintenance of the array as part of the research grant. As described in detail in the status report (M. Jost), the monthly uptime of the array varied during the reporting period between 99.3% and 88.6% with an average of 97.4%. Two major research projects were finished and separated papers are included in this report. The first report explores specific path effects for regional waves in Central Europe. The second report addresses the problem of array calibration with respect to azimuth and slowness. The GSE is currently developing a final concept for an international seismic data exchange system which includes a two-tiered global network of stations where the first tier, the so-called alpha-network, consists primarily of arrays and is designed to provide not only the required detection threshold throughout the world but also to achieve a preliminary event location.
