Composite Panel Failure Analysis and Improvement Plan

Abstract

Engineering test specimens and prototype XM19 Landing Mat sections were examined to determine the reasons for below-standard performance. Electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermal analyses were used in addition to visual microscopy, to determine the locus of failure, residual adhesive cure, and identify contributing causes of the failures. A number of poor production practices were identified, and a prototype process improvement plan proposed. Failure analysis, Adhesive bonding, Landing mats, Bonding improvements.
