A Practical HTS SQUID Magnetometer System for NDI of Aircraft
Abstract
This report describes a study to assess the feasibility of using a high-Tc SQUID based magnetometry system to detect subsurface defects in aircraft. Four major tasks were performed: (1) identification of the defects of most interest to the aircraft NDI community; (2) mathematical modelling of the magnetic field due to a defect when exposed to eddy currents; (3) experimental demonstration of the technique on scale models using a laboratory system; and (4) detailed analysis of the electronic and cryogenic system requirements. This work was performed in collaboration with Dr. Fred Wellstood of the Superconductivity Center at the University of Maryland.
