The Sol-Gel-Xerogel Transition

Abstract

This contract supported the development of the technology of trapping of organic molecules and enzymes in porous sol-gel matrices. Our work led to the preparation and design of a wide range of novel optical materials. We summarize past achievements and recent progress made in the development of several classes of these materials, representing the diversity that the trapping approach allows: Chemical sensors, enzymatic sensors, electrooptical liquid crystal materials, luminescent materials and photochromic materials. Emphasis in this Report is given to our own results, and in addition, results from other laboratories, which are based on our developments and which are of high relevance to the topic of the Project (e.g., liquid crystal sol-gel displays), are summarized as well: we regard these other technological fruits a direct outcome of our sol-gel research.
