Multiple-Channel Equalization of a Nearfield Sonar System
Abstract
Adaptive equalization, although most commonly applied in communications, is necessary in many instances where signal fidelity must be maintained throughout a channel's medium. Adaptive equalization technology was used here as a solution to the problem of equalization a multiple-channel nearfield sonar system. Before compensation, a subset of the channels is characterized to assess the magnitude of the problem and the margin for performance improvement. This characterization data provides evidence that equalization is absolutely essential if the sonar system is to perform with any degree of accuracy. After a brief description of the selected processor, equalization is performed on the selected channels. Channel characterization data from before and after compensation is then compared to examine performance enhancements.
