Status of Developing a Multifunctional Aviation Grease

Abstract

A program has been initiated to develop a new multifunctional helicopter grease. The purpose for the development of this new grease is to provide a product having significantly improved performance, reduce the overall logistics and supply burdens, reduce procurement costs, and control the continuing increase in proliferation of proprietary non-standard products. The effort during FY91 - FY92 was devoted to determine the preliminary target requirements and to formulate the experimental grease. In these efforts, the preliminary target requirements were developed based on what is believed to be achievable with current technology versus projected system requirements. Based on these preliminary target requirements, the experimental greases were formulated using an advanced lithium complex technology as thickener and a mix polyalphaolefin (PAO) synthetic base oil, a small amount of high viscosity mineral oils, and various additives. On the basis of the work completed to date, the experimental greases were very close to meeting the preliminary target requirements and are promising as the candidate aviation greases.
