Digital Mapping, Charting, and Geodesy Analysis Program Technical Review of Urban Vector Smart Map (UV Map) Prototype 1

Abstract

In an effort to transition from paper to digital maps, the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) has produced several prototypes that will be used throughout the military (and final products will likely be used in civilian environments). Some examples are the Digital Chart of the World and World Vector Shoreline. As part of the prototyping procedure, DMA via N096 regularly requests the Naval Research Laboratory's Digital Mapping, Charting, and Geodesy Analysis Program for evaluations of the prototypes. Described in this report are the results of the evaluation of one such prototype: Urban Vector Smart Map (UVMap). Digitized from city graphics and stored on Compact Disk-Read Only Memory, UVmap, shows potential as being an excellent source of high-resolution, easily accessible (under proper classification restraints) urban data. Implementation of the suggestions will enhance UVMap's capabilities.
