Implementation of an Intravenous/Phlebotomy Team at Walter Reed Army Medical Center
Abstract
Each major department of Walter Reed Army Medical Center was asked to develop a list of its top five priorities for the next eighteen to twenty-four months. Among those listed by the department of medicine and department of nursing was an intravenous/phlebotomy team. Various proposals were initiated by the proponent departments. This research consisted of a case study analysis using Patton's (1989) case study analysis method. The IV service coordinators of four local civilian hospitals were interviewed, and cases developed from these discussions. Teams at the case hospitals were composed of various mixes of registered nurses and technicians, with the scope of practice and duties varying from one facility to another. After analysis of cases developed for this research, it is my opinion that information gathered supports hiring the personnel necessary to staff an IV service at Walter Reed. The team should be composed of registered nurses and technicians and provide 24-hour coverage seven days per week. Intravenous, Phlebotomy, Venipuncture.
