Planning and Implementing a Hospital Recycling Program at Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton, California
Abstract
The purpose of this project was to develop a comprehensive plan and begin the implementation of a recycling program at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. Many cities, counties, and states have source reduction and recycling goals for their areas. The President has mandated that the Department of Defense and other Federal agencies promote cost-effective waste reduction and recycling of reusable materials. The Commandant of the Marine Corps has set a goal of a 50% reduction by weight in the amount of solid waste disposed of over the FY90 to FY95 period. The policy of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is that all tenant organizations actively engage in materials recycling. Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton generates a huge amount of waste but has no active program to recycle non-infectious reusable material. As a result the hospital is not in compliance with current Navy, Marine Corps, and DoD directives; is spending too much on trash disposal; is contributing to the depletion of the base landfill; and is not taking advantage of the additional MWR funds that could be made available through the sale of recycable material.
