Collocated Tunable Wavenumber Sensor/Actuators for Smart Structures

Abstract

The first full-sized (note: the actuator module referred to last month was only approximately 3/4 of the desired thickness) actuator module has been fabricated. The first actuator was sintered using the sintering profile of the 3/4-sized actuator module (5 deg C/min to 900 deg C, 1 hour hold, 1 deg C/ min to 1200 deg C, 3 hour hold, 1 deg C/min to 500 deg C to room temperature). This actuator cracked during sintering. The sintering schedule was once again slowed down for the second actuator module (5 deg C/min to 500 deg C, 2 deg C to 900 deg C, hold 1 hour, 1 deg C to 1200 deg C, hold 3 hours, 1 deg C to room temperature), and as a result, we were able to fabricate our first full-sized actuator module without cracks. One full-sized actuator module is out of burnout and is awaiting sintering. Two 3/4-sized actuator modules have survived sintering without cracks. We plan to use these to help set-up our polishing and testing procedures for the full-sized actuators.
