The British Middle East Force, 1939-1942: Multi-Front Warfare with Coalition Forces

Abstract

An analysis of the British Middle East Force's conduct of operations during the opening years of World War 11, discussing implicit concerns associated with the conduct of multi-front warfare employing a coalition force. Through review and analysis of the campaigns conducted by the Middle East Force various problems in managing a multi-national coalition force are explored, centering primarily on the actions and concerns of the three Middle East theater commanders in relation to the Commonwealth troops available to them during the conflict. The decisions the theater commanders took in forging these disparate forces into a cohesive and effective whole will be discussed, particularly with reference towards those problems which they were ultimately unable to effectively deal with and which may have ultimately prolonged the war.
