Estimation of Doppler Frequency in the Presence of Noise

Abstract

This paper discusses the estimation of the Doppler frequency of an incoming RF signal that is corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise. The estimation is performed using the sampled in-phase and quadrature components of the demodulated signal. The Cramer-Rao lower bounds for the minimum variance estimators as well as the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator are derived. The mean-square error of the ML estimator is then studied.
