Technology Demonstration of Single Hydraulic Fluid for Armored Ground Vehicle Systems

Abstract

The primary hydraulic fluids used today by the U.S. Army are MIL-H- 6083 and MIL-H-46170. MIL-H-6083 is a petroleum-base, low flash point fluid, and MIL-H-46170 is a synthetic fluid with a higher flash point but extremely high viscosity at lower temperatures. This new fluid, referred to as single hydraulic fluid (SHF), is a synthetic-base fluid with improved flammability and low- temperature viscosity characteristics. This report discusses the SHF characteristics, laboratory evaluations, and initiation of pilot field demonstration and preliminary results. Hydraulic fluid, Low temperature, Fire resistant.
