Evaluation of Thermal Batteries for Hazardous Waste Characteristics

Abstract

Thermal batteries data was reviewed to determine their hazardous waste characteristics under United States environmental regulations. The study concludes that thermal batteries are hazardous waste, and that the electrochemical system in the battery determines its hazardous waste characteristics. Some batteries exhibit toxicity, and other reactivity.
