Puerto Rico: Information for Status Deliberations

Abstract

This report provides background information on Puerto Rico's history and culture, its relationship with the federal government, and its governmental structure, economy, and socioeconomic conditions. The report also summarizes several key transition issues facing the Congress as it defines the three options to be voted on by the Puerto Rican people-statehood, independence, and enhanced commonwealth. The report was prepared jointly with the Congressional Research Service in order to brief the Subcommittee.
